EYECARE

We offer a range of eye care services including eye examinations and contact lens fittings. A full list of our services can be found below.

EYE EXAMINATIONS (ADULT)

Having your eye sight tested regularly is important because your eyes don't usually hurt when something is wrong unlike the rest of your body. An eye test is also a valid health check for your eyes. It's recommended that adults have their eyes tested every two years, unless their opticians advises them to have a sight test more often than that.

At Sight Centre Opticians, we conduct comprehensive enhanced eye health examinations that can detect diseases like glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, cataract and more.

A sight test will show if you need to get glasses for the first time or change your current glasses.

Our private standard eye examinations include Fundus photographs, and our private enhanced eye examinations include Fundus photographs and Ocular Topography.

CHILD EYE EXAMINATIONS

Eye examinations are vey important for children to ensure their eyes are developing normally, especially between the ages of 3 to 7.

Both vision and eye health need to be monitored as children often do not know, or say, that they have a problem. It is advisable for kids to have their eyes tested regularly starting from the age of 3 or 4 (depending on the child's ability).

CONTACT LENS CONSULTATION / FITTING

Every eye is different. Differences include the diameter and the curvature of your eye, not to mention the severity of any vision problems that you might have. This is why getting the precise contact lens fitting is so important.

Our optician will take careful measurements of your eyes using a special instrument called a keratometer. Your eye dimensions will determine the shape and size of your lenses. Thereafter, we will have you wear trial lenses as a part of your fitting.

We stock most of the major contact lenses suppliers so we will fit the most appropriate lenses. Choices include daily disposable and monthly disposable options in standard, toric and multifocal varieties as well as cosmetic coloured options. We are also one of the very few practices that fit and supply Gas Permeable Contact Lenses.

You can see more information about our contact lens options by clicking the link below.

SHARED CARE SERVICES

We have always aimed to provide the highest level of clinical eyecare at our practice.

Our eyecare practitioners have worked in practice over the years to enhance their knowledge.

We are a recognised centre for extended role services in the community. We work closely with the local Ophthalmology Departments at St Thomas’s and Kings College Hospitals.

MINOR EYE CONDITIONS

The minor eye conditions service involves the assessment and treatment of a number of eye conditions in the community under the NHS. You can be referred by your GP or self refer for assessment.

The optometrists will perform the assessment and is able to see you for a range of conditions including red eye, sticky eye, watery eye, pain or discomfort in or around the eyes and recent onset or sudden increase of flashes of light or floaters.

The service aims to improve eye health and provide increased access to eye care nearer to your home or work. This is a wonderful extension to the hospital eye service in particular the eye casualty.

GLAUCOMA

The glaucoma referral refinement scheme allows the optometrist to repeat the intraocular pressure test and the visual field test when the initial readings are abnormal.

The optometrist is then able to make a more informed decision whether you are suspicious of having glaucoma. If you are in need of referral, the optometrist is able to directly refer you to a local hospital for in depth glaucoma screening and avoids going to see your GP to be referred.

CATARACT

Most cataracts occur as part of the normal ageing process.

If your Optometrist informs you that you have a cataract but you can see clearly and they are not causing a problem, there is no need to do any more but have eye examinations at intervals recommended by your optometrist. However if the cataract is causing you visual problems such as difficulties reading or driving then it is possible for you to have cataract surgery. If this is indicated the Optometrist will perform a dilated Fundus examination.

The details of the risks and benefits of cataract surgery will be discussed as part of the details of the surgery.

You will have time to discuss any issues or concerns you have and together make an informed decision to have surgery. The optometrist is able to refer you directly to a local hospital of your choice for surgery. Eight weeks after surgery you can return to have your spectacles updated.

AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular degeneration (AMD) affects the ageing population.

There are different types of AMD but only the wet variety can be treated under NICE guidelines. If the Optometrist feels your symptoms or signs are indicative of Wet AMD you will be referred directly to the AMD clinic at the local hospitals and treated appropriately. This scheme forms part of the wet AMD direct referral pathway.
